As I type this blog, I just got off the phone with my grandma. Clarice is 87 years young! I called her on her cell phone and she was at Denny’s playing cards (Hearts & 5oo) with the same group of ladies that she has played with for the past 11 yrs.
My other grandma is 85, this past year, she too got a cell phone! Is that cool or what? They feel so empowered and connected with the 21st Century now, and to be honest, they feel alot safer driving after dark!
If I lived up North, I guarantee I’d have them both set-up with a Facebook account so that they could be a part of what their grandchildren and great-grandchildren were up to, and look at all of the photos of what’s going on in everyone’s lives. After plunking around for a bit, they would no doubt find some pages to “like” and be following their favorite brands and hooking up with events at the Senior Center!
The 55+ community and beyond are jumping on the Facebook fan wagon by leaps and bounds. This tight knit group of baby-booming, Elvis loving, outgoing hipsters are very much into technology and not afraid to spend their disposable incomes on keeping up with what’s going ononline.
Bnet reports that the number of people in the United States over the age of 65 is likely to double to 70 million-up from 35 million between 2000 and 2030. The 65-plus segment represented 12.4% of the population in 2000, but will represent a 20 % slice by 2030.
- According to recent estimates, the ages 57 to 66 population group has more than $550 million in spending power, and the 67-plus group has roughly $30 billion more, or $580 billion, at its disposal. They are spending large chunks of this money on health and nutrition, and they re spending disproportionately less on such categories as apparel and “shelter.”
- Check out this awesome infographic on just how lucrative it is for YOUR BUSINESS to tap into this gem of a sector and start connecting and engaging with them and launch offerings to them on the exact goods and services that they are interested in buying. I have found that seniors are a very loyal customer base, who enjoys spending time with the things that they value. They have all the time in the world to come to your door, and Facebook surely is a way for you to invite them to do just that!
